Cervical laminectomy
Overview
At Indotaj Medical Care, our specialized team offers advanced spinal care, including cervical laminectomy procedures.
Cervical laminectomy is a surgical procedure designed to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and nerves in the neck by removing part of the vertebral bone (lamina).
Conditions Treated:
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck.
- Herniated Discs: Protrusion of spinal discs causing compression.
- Bone Spurs: Overgrowth of bone that can impinge on nerves.
- Tumors: Surgical removal of spinal tumors.
Why it's done
Cervical laminectomy may be recommended for several reasons, including:
- Cervical laminectomy is often performed to treat spinal stenosis, a condition where the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This narrowing can lead to pain, weakness, numbness, and other symptoms.
- When discs between the vertebrae in the neck herniate or bulge, they can press against the spinal cord or nerve roots. Cervical laminectomy may be done to relieve this pressure and alleviate symptoms such as neck pain and radiating arm pain.
- Overgrowth of bone, known as bone spurs or osteophytes, can occur in the cervical spine. These bony outgrowths may compress nerves or the spinal cord, leading to pain and neurological symptoms. Cervical laminectomy can remove these bone spurs.
- Cervical laminectomy may be performed to remove tumors in the spinal canal or on the spinal cord. Tumors can cause compression, leading to pain and neurological deficits.
- Severe traumatic injuries or fractures in the cervical spine may necessitate cervical laminectomy to address instability, decompress the spinal cord, or manage associated injuries.
- Over time, the discs in the cervical spine can degenerate, leading to pain and reduced mobility. In some cases, cervical laminectomy may be considered to address symptoms associated with degenerative disc disease.
- When conservative treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and injections fail to provide relief for cervical spine conditions, surgery, including cervical laminectomy, may be considered as a more definitive solution.
Risk
Cervical laminectomy, can pose potential risks and complications. Some of these include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Nerve Injury
How do I get ready for Cervical laminectomy?
Preparing for Cervical laminectomy involves several steps to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery:
- Schedule and attend a preoperative consultation with your orthopedic or spine surgeon. Discuss your medical history, current medications, and any pre-existing conditions.
- Complete any necessary diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans, as recommended by your surgeon.
- Undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to assess your overall health and identify any factors that might impact the surgery.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of the procedure. This makes it easier to change into a gown if necessary.
- Bring necessary personal items, including identification, insurance information, and any documents provided by your healthcare team.
- Adhere to any specific preoperative instructions provided by your surgeon or healthcare team.
